Preserving Loudoun County’s Rural Roads
America’s Routes was conceived as an effort to fully document and potentially preserve the remaining 300 miles of Loudoun’s rural roads by educating the public and officials about the significance of this historic resource. This largely intact, beautiful and unique network of old roads, dating back to the very earliest days of our Nation, captures the history of our region from Native American trails, to early settlers, to the growth of the agricultural economy, to wars, slavery and freedom, to the coming of the motor vehicle and growth. But, we have found that changing lifestyles — commuters motoring to the suburbs and fewer farmers — threaten the future of the rural roads. Each year, more roads are moved to the “to be paved” list.
The grant is for partial funding to seek historic designation National Register Recognition at the preliminary information level. The entire America’s Routes project is composed of four parts. Samples of our work are posted on our web site at https://americasroutes.com.
